Travel with me

A few trips each year, places I know personally and a clear plan. Find out what a shared trip looks like and what the price includes.

Before you pack

Hotels, vehicles and luggage

A room for two

I choose hotels in approximately the 2.5–3-star category, with two queen beds per room. Rooms accommodate no more than two people. The exception is families with children — then, occasionally, three or even four people share a room.

I look for hotels serving a hot breakfast. Breakfast is usually included in the room rate. In my experience, American hotels in this category are simpler than you might expect from a similar star rating in Europe.

A vehicle suited to the group

Depending on the number of travellers, we use a large SUV such as a Chevrolet Suburban or a 12–15-passenger van. The larger van leaves room for luggage as well; its seating capacity does not mean a larger group.

I confirm luggage size with you before departure so that everyone's bags fit in the selected vehicle.

How much clothing and luggage should I bring?

Pack light. Many hotels along the route have washers and dryers, so there is usually an opportunity to do laundry every 2–3 days instead of packing clothes for every day. Availability and charges vary by hotel.

On the Chicago & the American West trip, items you do not need for the road trip can be left in Chicago. We arrange the details before flying to Las Vegas. Domestic flight baggage allowances are checked for the specific ticket.

Chicago & the American West in late May / early June — what should I pack?

Bring light clothing, comfortable walking shoes and sun protection, but also a warm layer and a windproof, rainproof jacket. Mountain areas, mornings and the coast can call for warmer clothing.

Do not count on hot weather throughout the route: snow can remain in Yosemite's higher elevations in May and June. I check the forecast and road and trail access before travelling.

What does a typical day look like?

Morning

Breakfast and departure

Hotel breakfast usually ends around 9 am. We generally leave after breakfast, although some days call for an earlier start — for example, at 8 am.

During the day

Driving, stops and exploring

The pace is moderate, but distances in the USA are long. Drives are interspersed with viewpoints and walks. Longer walks are optional; I arrange activities with the rest of the group in the meantime.

Evening

Hotel and time to relax

We usually reach the hotel around 6 pm, leaving time for a meal at your own expense, rest or laundry. This is a typical rhythm, not a fixed timetable: longer drives or evening sightseeing may change it.

Starting Chicago & the American West: I allow 2–3 days for Chicago; the published 18-day itinerary includes three days. We then fly to Las Vegas to start the road trip loop. Other trips have their own starting points, shown in their itineraries.
