Days 1–3 • The journey begins

We spend three days exploring the skyline beside Lake Michigan, outstanding architecture and the essential sights of downtown Chicago. On day 4 we fly to Las Vegas, where the American West road loop begins.

We spend three days exploring the skyline beside Lake Michigan, outstanding architecture and the essential sights of downtown Chicago. On day 4 we fly to Las Vegas, where the American West road loop begins.
On the Chicago & the American West itinerary, our stay includes the arrival day and two days of sightseeing. This is how I usually split the main downtown sights, allowing time for walks and stops along the way.
We start at Navy Pier, then take a water taxi to the Willis Tower area and visit the observation deck. Afterwards, we return towards Navy Pier by water taxi.
We walk along the Chicago Riverwalk, then visit Millennium Park and the famous Bean — Cloud Gate. There is time to explore downtown on foot, take photos and pause along the way.
I adjust the order to the weather. If conditions disrupt our plans, I change the order of sights and walks as we go. Water taxi journeys are planned around the operator's current timetable.
Shoreline — water taxi routes and schedule ↗We choose a restaurant together, based on the group's preferences. Italian, Chinese, Greek, Mexican or perhaps Polish? Chicago has no shortage of cuisines from around the world. I'm happy to recommend somewhere I know. Meals other than hotel breakfast are at your own expense.
In the American West, attractions are often hundreds of miles apart. Each point therefore shows the distance and typical driving time, helping both independent travellers and trip guests understand the real pace.
